Course Preview: ZOOMA Great Lakes

Lake Geneva: tranquility and beauty in one neatly wrapped half-marathon package.

We’ve scoped out and set up a great race course for the first year of ZOOMA Great Lakes. We’re as excited about race day as you are; it’s so much fun to see runners on the course, instead of just imagining them there. So that you know the course as intimately as we do, here’s a breakdown of the half-marathon.

Miles 0-2: After an enthusiastic start at the Abbey Resort, you’ll head out of town—and up a steady incline until mile 2. Look at the climb as beneficial; it’ll prevent you from going out too fast. Around mile 1.5 and 3 you’ll have a chance to drink water (and Ultima Replenisher, an electrolyte replacement, at mile 3) and use the port-a-potty, in case you need it.

Miles 2-4: You’ll hang a U-Turn and retrace your steps as you head back towards the resort and begin a long stretch along glorious Geneva Lake, which is 26 miles around (be glad you’re not lapping the whole thing). Drink up—both water and Ultima will be available—shortly after you pass mile 4.

Miles 4-7: Easily the most beautiful part of the course—and possibly the whole state of Wisconsin. On your right, you’ll be passing century-old mansions—Lake Geneva’s nickname is the Newport of the West—and on your left is the lake, which will likely be dotted with sailboats. You’ll hit some rolling hills, but the scenery will easily distract you from the short climbs. Another beverage/bathroom station is just before mile 6.

Miles 7-9: You’ll venture into farmland, with corn fields on either side. If you’re really lucky, you might see a deer or wild turkey. More likely, though, the only wildlife you’ll see is other runners, who you’ll pass on Maple Ridge Road; some will be heading out towards mile 9, and others will be heading home. Cheer loudly; the real animals won’t care. Water/Ultima/lou in both directions.

Water, water everywhere. The pool at the Avani Spa: see you there after the race.

Miles 10-13: Back along the lakefront for the last 5k. Enjoy heading down the hills you already climbed as you head towards the marina at the Abbey Resort. If you need a little more hydration before the finish, grab it after mile 11 and mile 13.

Mile 13-13.1+: A sweet, screaming downhill brings you across the finish line, where you’ll be greeted with a groovy, beautiful necklace; plenty of water and wine; and a post-race expo where you can reward yourself for your effort. Later in the day, meander over to the Avani Spa, where ZOOMA runners get 20% off all spa services. (Book a massage before the race, so you have extra incentive to kill it on the hills.)
