Every two minutes, a woman around the world dies from complications due to pregnancy or childbirth, creating a rippling effect that devastates children, families, and communities. But 90% of those deaths are preventable—with your help.Â
Every Mother Counts is an advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by Christy Turlington Burns that aims to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally. www.everymothercounts.org

What You Can Do:
1. Run or Walk. Every Mile = 25¢  Download the Charity Miles app on your iPhone or Android device. Just choose “Every Mother Counts” and press start. As you walk, run or bike, the app tracks your distance and you earn money for EMC. Walkers and runners earn 25¢ per mile! You’re already training (and we love multi-tasking) so why not put those miles to work. (Note: You must log in to Charity Miles with your Facebook login.)
2. Become an EMC Fundraiser. When you register for a ZOOMA race, make sure you check “Fundraise for Every Mother Counts” under the Fundraising box on the active.com registration page. You’ll then receive information in your confirmation email about how to create your own fundraising page. If you’ve already registered for a race, you can go directly here to create an online fundraising page. With your fundraising page, you can begin notifying your family and friends that you’re running on behalf of women and mothers everywhere.

In addition to raising funds, how else does your run help support maternal health?
Distance is often one of the biggest barriers to care for women in developing countries. 5 kilometers is less than the average distance a pregnant woman in the developing world must travel to receive the basic care necessary to deliver her baby. For many women, that means walking while 9 months pregnant and in labor. If the woman needs more comprehensive obstetric care, that distance increases considerably—it’s not uncommon to have to travel the distance of a marathon. As part of team EMC, you can help raise awareness about this simple but devastating barrier.
